BIO 380 - Kalahari Field Course

Block course, 6 ECTS

Becoming a field biologist

Students learn to develop and test their own research ideas and questions, and to communicate them. All of this in an astounding environment.
The course is designed to make students feel more comfortable in a research environment, and to introduce them to the African wildlife.

 

Location: Kalahari Research Centre KRC, South Africa
When: 13 August to 9 September 2025

week 1 & 2: Kalahari Research Centre, South Africa
week 3: Kgalagadi and Augrabies Falls National Parks, South Africa

Who: 16 students (after completed 4th semester) in biology and environmental sciences with basic knowledge in ecology, evolutionary biology, behavioural ecology and statistics.

 

Objectives

  • to formulate and test hypotheses
  • using data from small field projects
  • to use modern statistics for data analysis
  • to present research ideas and projects
  • to write scientific reports
  • learn about local fauna, flora, conservation and culture

Costs: CHF 3100.- *, ** (includes travel, accommodation and food)

 * ETH students or students from other universities pay CHF 4100 (excluding the DEBES contribution of CHF 1000 per student)
** UZH students with little funding can apply for a reduction based on their financial possibilities – please contact Marta Manser
