New IASC Leadership: Gabriela Schaepman-Strub Elected as Vice-President

Prof. Dr. Gabriela Schaepman-Strub has been elected Vice President of the International Arctic Science Committee (IASC) for the 2025–2029 term. With 25 member countries, the IASC plays a key role in coordinating Arctic research worldwide — and Switzerland is right at the heart of it.

Gabriela Schaepman-Strub’s election recognizes her scientific leadership and her commitment to understanding one of the fastest-changing regions on the planet.

The Executive Committee operates as a board of directors and manages IASC’s activities between Council meetings. The Executive Committee consists of five elected officials: the President and four Vice-Presidents, and the Executive Secretary. “The Arctic is warming 4 times as fast as the planet on average. During the 5th International Polar Year in 2032-33, the research community will perform large-scale international field campaigns to measure the pulse of the fast-changing poles and the consequences for the planet. I am looking forward to support the Arctic research community in its coordination towards the International Polar Year in my new role,” says Schaepman-Strub, underlining the importance of interdisciplinary research in this region.

The current IASC Executive Committee members are:
Henry Burgess, President
João Canario, Vice-President
Matthew Druckenmiller, Vice-President
Hiroyuki Enomoto, Vice-President
Gabriela Schaepman-Strub, Vice-President
Gerlis Fugmann, IASC Executive Secretary
